GUIDES TO THE LIBRARY

A reader can use the University library only if he/she has formally registered and has been issued with a reader’s library card. This card must be shown and surrendered on demand to any official of the library who may prohibit entry to anyone who is unable to produce it.

How to Find a Book

A reader is advised to always consult the catalogue(s) first before going inside the reading room to fetch book as this saves much time. The online public Access Catalogue (OPAC) also displays the catalogue for readers to access online.

If a reader knows the author of a book, he then checks the author/title catalogue under the author's surname. Please note that here includes editors, compliers, etc. Book without personal authors should be checked under the title or under the name of the body that issued them. The reader should then put down the call number of the book (this appears on the left hand top corner of the card) and proceed to the opens access collection in the main reading room where the books are arranged on the shelves in the sequence of the classification numbers. The shelves have guides which will assist readers in locating the books.

To know all the books that the library has on a particular subject, one has to consult the subject catalogue or the shelf list, if one knows the classification number of the subject.

When a reader cannot find the book he wants, he should not hesitate to seek the assistance of the reference librarian, or any other library staff. When he wants a book which is not on open access, (that is, he is not allowed to reach where it is located) he should apply for it through the reference librarian or at the circulation desk.

How to Borrow a Book

When you find a book you want to borrow, take it to the circulation desk and complete the transaction slips as directed by the circulation.

Assistant (by writing your name, signature and address legibly on the borrower's slip). Hand in the transaction slips, the book and a borrower's ticket to the Assistant whom will stamp the date due on the transaction slip as well as on the date-due label at the inside back cover of the book and then return the book to you.
