Transport Management Technology programme initially started in 2007/2008 academic session as an option in the defunct Department of Management Technology in the School of Sciences. The Department became a full-fledged academic entity in the 2009/2010 academic session. On 1st April 2010 Prof. E. Okoko was appointed the substantive and pioneer Head of Department of Transport Management Technology. He served as the Head of Department for three years from 1st April 2010 to 31st July 2014 and was succeeded by Dr K. T. Gbadamosi who also served for three years (1st June 2014 – 31st July 2017) and handed over to the current Head of Department, Dr. M. S. Stephens.

At the inception, the staff strength of the Department stood at four (4) namely, Prof. E. Okoko, Dr. V.O. Asekunowo Mr. E.A. Owoputi and Mr. C.A. Enyinda. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Kingdom Bello and Mr. I. Njoku were appointed as Assistant Lecturers, Mrs. O.O. Balogun was posted as the departmental secretary, and then Mr. G.R. Igbe and Mrs. Helen Babatunde were also posted as supporting office staff. In the same vein, the Department started with 23 pioneer students. Within the tenure of Prof. E. Okoko, the staff strength increased from 9 in 2010 to 17 in 2013. This was made up of 11 academic and 4 non-academic staff, and two Teaching Assistants. It is of interest to note that at the end of year 2016 the staff strength has increased to 21 academic staff, 4 Technologists and 3 Administrative staff. Currently, the students’ population has risen over 500 while a lot of up-to-date facilities have been available for training of students. The Department from inception has so far produced over 330 graduates.

The Department is currently enjoying the full accreditation by the National Universities Commission and the professional world institute on transport – Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT London). In a bid to contribute to human capacity building in the nation, the Department has in 2012/2013 session commenced Post Graduate Diploma alongside higher degree programmes like M.Tech and PhD in Transport Management Technology. Meanwhile 10 academic staff of the Department are currently on their Doctoral degree programmes both within and outside Nigeria.
